VR Arcade Interface UX/UI
Premier Game Rooms has several arcade cabinet models, including a VR headset station. This arcade features a 65” vertical display along with an HTC Vive Pro headset and controllers, surround sound with 5.1 bass, and a fully lit cabinet with both front facing and side facing light features. This arcade required an interface that is both easy to manage and operate but robust enough to handle the task at hand seamlessly, without the use of the windows main operating explorer.
COMPLICATIONS
Using the windows 10 operating system is difficult when the main file explorer is not used, as there are some dependencies that need to be launched when the computer is activated. Likewise, some of the hardware such as the sound bar and television also need to be interfaced with the computer, and solutions need to be examined for reducing the amount of remote controls, buttons, and other interfaces that need to be activated to get the entire unit to operate once powered on.
SOLUTIONS
The Godot Game engine was selected to build the interface, not only for its simple interface but also for its translatable programming language, capable of developing distributions for several operating systems, in the event of the interface working as expected and needing to be ported to another format. This process was the easiest to complete, at which point the shell was edited in the host computer to point directly to the interface instead of the windows explorer, solving the problem with not using the main operating system while still having it active. Creative wiring and installation of additional external controls that interfaced with the operating system at a basic level allowed for simple operation by the use of just 3 buttons. Power up was reduced to main breaker and activation switches via proper television to soundbar wire tracing and program setting.
