Utica Comets 2019 Wraps

The Utica Comets, via Carbone Lithia Motors, approached our sign shop to design, print and install wraps for several show piece vehicles, to be displayed at the Utica Auditorium front entrance, as well as at the dealerships before and after games. This was a group project working with the team at Premier Signs and Graphics, with myself as the lead designer, and several installation associates that completed the process. All materials were printed in-house and installed by the team exclusively for this project without additional outsourcing

COMPLICATIONS

The vehicles were lot models and had to return to the dealerships after exhibition, for this reason the materials used would have to be both temporary and easily removable, while also lasting for the course of several months without failure. The vehicles were also to be deployed on short notice, needing for installation either on-site at the dealership with little recourse if errors occur, as materials would need to be re-printed off-site. The vehicles must also not lose value due to any damage occurring from installation, and the design must closely match the current branding of the comets, of which there was only a logo to use as guidelines.

SOLUTIONS

The team opted to use a high-performance low initial tack vinyl to meet the needs of both conformability and longevity, while allowing for easy removal after the campaign was complete or vehicles completed their rotation. While there were several vehicle types that were wrapped, they all shared a common brand or look along makes and models so only slight modifications to the designs were needed. We coordinated ahead of time to get an idea of the vehicle models so we could print several installation kits preemptively, allowing for not only short notice installation but also backup materials in case of error. The design final design allowed a level of generality that was also exciting, in the case that if the vehicles had or lacked bold body lines, the design would make up for it uniformly.
